Mind Over Matter

I have been learning a few things in my never-ending journey. Hard to believe, I know! It has been incredible – and those who used to know me certainly would be surprised (and in utter disbelief) of who I am now. A few short years of intense evolution – mind, body and soul – and here I am. Anew! I can only attribute it to one simple thing. Mind over matter.

There are several other key elements involved, but without mind over matter – you have a big pile of not much. It takes a unity of connections within yourself. That’s the mind, body, spirit connection!

If you believe you can’t, you certainly won’t. If you believe the outcome of your endeavor will be bad – it shall be. If you know it will be positive, then you will reap positive rewards. The outcome itself doesn’t really matter much – it’s the perspective in which we look at it. Feeling nauseous? Let me elaborate…..

Two women are attending the same party.

Woman number one is excited to go, taking her time to dress for it, have her hair done and rev herself up for a great night of fun and dancing! She spends the afternoon listening to her favorite music, swaying back and forth to the melody – unaware that anyone might be watching. She is lifted by her favorite tunes – inspired. She can even feel the light kisses of the wind drifting over her skin and she appreciates it all.

Woman number two is dreading the evening. She feels fat and guilty after eating the buffet for lunch that afternoon with her work colleagues. They had sat together and mocked other women because it made them feel better about themselves. It made them forget about themselves. She would rather sit at home and watch reruns on television tonight while she shovels tablespoon after nutritionally empty tablespoon of Hagen Daaz into her frown. She needs a haircut and her feet are already swollen. She is comfortable in her sweatpants for now. Dancing? Not on the agenda for the night.

What’s the difference in these two women? It’s obvious, isn’t it? I’ll tell you a little secret – both of them are me. Shocked? Don’t be – I just finished telling you I had changed. I wasn’t kidding. Woman number one is the present me. Woman number two was the old me. I’m certain I don’t have to tell you which me I prefer.

It all starts with the belief that you can. Do one little thing for me – go back into your memory banks and figure out the answer to this simple question: Who ever told you that you couldn’t? Think about it – it is the beginnings of something wonderful!

The Saturday Snippet – Perfection

Nobody’s perfect!

I remember hearing this throughout my life and I always thought to myself, “What a great way to get out of having to try!” I wasn’t aware then (or now) of what the definition of perfect was. I had never witnessed it.

No one ever sat me down and said to me that I had to try to be perfect in every way – it was something I thought we all just did. We learn this very young when we see our parents frantically rushing around before a dinner party getting everything  just right. Perfect.

We get the picture even more as we grow up. Our school athletics department ensures we practice drills until we can’t take anymore, our mothers spit shined our faces so strangers didn’t think we were slobs and generally, you didn’t speak to anyone for fear you would embarrass your parents (I always tried very hard to accomplish this one).

Why do we try to be perfect anyway? Isn’t this a lot to live up to, especially when the end result is always disappointment (nobody is perfect). I can’t count the number of times I told myself to try even harder when there really was no possible way I could have accomplished what I had set out to do.

Will your kid’s big grade four hopscotch win make a huge difference in her later career? No, but it’s funny how cheerleading will. It is how we look at things – putting far too much emphasis on beauty and material things than true talent or behavior.

I speak to women every day who complain about how they are feeling and how they look. I give out compliments freely and I mean every single one of them. When I do, I see ladies wilt  and a look of disbelief crosses their faces. No one takes in what I am saying, nor do they believe it. The opinion we have of ourselves is always negative – why? I aim to change this, ladies!

Perfection won’t happen – ever. Get over it. Our goal is to be the best us we can be. The simplicity does not lack intellect. Think about it. We will not look like Drew Barrymore because we are not Drew Barrymore! She is gorgeous, funny and talented but she isn’t perfect either (Drew, feel free to call me, we need to hang out!).

I have met so many genuine people who share their stories with me – and I am so grateful to them for that. Through them, I learn so much while sharing my story at the same time. I know that when I am open and honest about who I am, others feel safe to be that way with me too.

We must always be bettering ourselves. Learning is the most important aspect of this, in my humble opinion. Progress is the key to life! Sure, we are all on the same conveyor belt headed out-of-town – but let’s enjoy being perfectly imperfect, shall we? Who knows – maybe we’ll have a few good laughs along the way!

Putting It Into Perspective

I am going to keep today’s blog post very, very simple. It is simple only in the sense that actual words will be fewer….but the importance of the words themselves could be life changing. They changed my life. Are you ready?

“Place an acorn into the ground. That acorn will struggle to break through the earth again and grow into a mighty oak. Now place a sheep in the ground – all it will do is decompose.”

Think about that. Yuck! (You’re welcome).

Like Riding a Bike

I have obtained exercise gear. I have a bike!

It has been really interesting because I find myself looking at things differently than I ever have before. I used to see a bike as a big huge pain in the……you know. Not only did it mean I had to get off my butt and move around (which was hard enough) but now you wanted me to add balance, poise, concentration and no T.V? Ugh! It sounded horrible!

When we got our daughter her bike, she was thrilled and wanted to test her abilities with various speeds. I couldn’t keep up – I was walking! I barely ran and didn’t want to go too far. She clearly did!

So, now that we each have a bike, we travel our roads regularly. We examine nature, take photographs and explore things we wouldn’t normally stop and give a second thought to. We appreciate every thing in nature – even the gross stuff!

Yesterday, as we drove down the road and I semi-listened to my daughter as she continuously chattered without taking a breath (kind of like I just did there….did you catch that…?) – and I noticed something. I suddenly felt like I was ten years old at my grandmother’s cabin on the lake.

The perfect combination of lighting, girlie chatter, scents in the air and visuals (blinding sunshine, pine trees stretched to the clouds when you look up) – it was phenomenal. Of course, anyone else might look at me and think I was strange. I assure you I am! I love things like this – and lately, nature has been a great way for our daughter and I to spend time learning and laughing together!

When things like this happen to me, it is merely a reminder to be grateful and keep moving. I have come a long way, yet not as far as most – and I am proud. I love the reminiscence of memories, but refuse to dwell too long in the realm of them for fear of becoming lost or determined to remain within their confines. Wow – Charlie Sheen moment!

My point is that memories are great if they benefit you – make you want to be better than you currently are. If memories are negative or bad and we dwell on them, we become absorbed into our thoughts and do nothing else. We fail to move. We fail to act. We stand still. Anything is better than that!

Instead of focusing my thoughts on anything negative from my past (my present does not contain these types of memories and we all have junk we didn’t like growing up so get over it already) – I create as many new positive memories as I can now. I barely remember the bad and I definitely like it that way! Trauma, however, is something our bodies shut down from by itself. We must deal with trauma effectively, or it becomes the thing we cannot pass by to progress…..and we all must progress.

One bike ride – and all of that came up. Interesting! Ponder your memories awhile – see what you like and what you don’t. Face the ones you’re not that fond of and sweep them out of the back corner of your mind. It’s clutter and it isn’t helping you.

Remember one thing – for every perspective you have on an issue or event that occurred in your life, there will be others who may see it differently. The war should not begin by defending these memories and being correct in recall. Share, explore them and relate. Enjoy the banter but don’t use ego. Use love! That’s all it is about. It brings people closer, gives us information that we may be missing from how things truly were growing up and allows us to sweep it clean.

If there are those that refuse to ‘go there’ – forgive them. They are not ready to deal with your progress because they are standing still and that’s ok. Maybe one day they will approach you with the same thing. It will go far better then!

Discovering wellness and a healthy lifestyle after years of being obese and lazy is like getting back on the bike. You’ll catch on really fast and feel great.

Happy Saturday – we’re off for a bike ride!

Play With Your Food – Beat It to a Pulp!

I love discovering little tips and tricks when it comes to wellness. Anything that can save me even more time – wow! When we figured this tidbit out, we had to show it off!

Take a pineapple. Any pineapple will do.  We’ve noticed that a pineapple will start to rot from the base it sits on. Mold will start to show and the pineapple will feel soft in that area.

Contrary to the peaches and nectarines we buy, pineapple rots from the base, up the skin – not from the centre out.

Ok….back to the trick….

Not only will this save you money, it will give you a little extra pineapple juice each and every time! What could be better?

After you have sliced off the ends and cut the rind off, you must ensure the pieces will fit into your style of juicer. Once that is done, set your juicer up (they vary) and run that fruit through until all you are left with is this:

This globby mess in your bowl is called the pulp of the fruit. If you juice a vegetable, it is still called pulp. This is not the juice part – no worries.

We were looking at the pulp after we had juiced and thought that it still contained a lot of juice! Hubby decided to run the pulp through the juicer one more time – for fun. See the juice bowl? Watch the next photo – the juice level will rise. We get back a lot of juice!

What you don’t see in the bowl is what we got back in juice. I generally use the pulp in other recipes as fiber – but in this case, the pineapple provides so much juice that there isn’t even enough pulp to make a cookie! Hubby pops this pulp ‘button’ into his mouth and it’s over.

Pineapple is so good for your skin and overall health it astounds me! Natural News says: Pineapple is a remarkable fruit. We find it enjoyable because of its lush, sweet and exotic flavor, but it may be one of the most healthful foods available today. If we take a more detailed look at it, we will find that pineapple is valuable for easing indigestion, arthritis or sinusitis. The juice has an anthelmintic effect; it helps get rid of intestinal worms. Let’s look at how pineapple affects other conditions.

Pineapple is high in manganese, a mineral that is critical to development of strong bones and connective tissue. A cup of fresh pineapple will give you nearly 75% of the recommended daily amount. It is particularly helpful to older adults, whose bones tend to become brittle with age.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme, is the key to pineapple’s value. Proteolytic means “breaks down protein”, which is why pineapple is known to be a digestive aid. It helps the body digest proteins more efficiently.

Pineapple – it has to be one of the greatest foods out there. Versatile, delicious and incredibly good for you! I realize she may get bitchy at times, but Mother Nature – she’s a genius! Enjoy your juice! Run that pulp through again!

Your General Health Questionnaire

I found a really cool way of determining where you stand when it comes to wellness. I wish I had found this years ago – it would have saved us some researching – but we’ve got it now!

I have gone through my questions, answering as honestly as I can. It’s your turn! Be sure to allot enough time to finish the questionnaire without rushing. Each one is as important as the last. The questionnaire is here.

It covers everything; women’s health, men’s health, immune system function and so on. It covers what I have never had a doctor cover with me. Strange – but true!

The place is called The Global Healing Centre and I have been exploring their website lately. The information and products look so great that I find myself stumbling to soak it all up at once. I am really enjoying the feeling these websites give me – I know I’m doing the absolute best I can for my body when I stick with real nutrition.

What you do is finish the questionnaire, then do a cleansing – and then redo the questions to determine the success you  had in certain areas. It is quite the unique approach and I shall be using this form the next time I plan a cleanse!

Remember to be honest when answering. It will be that much more beneficial to you – and really, aren’t we a tad past fibbing about the issues we are having anyway? Let’s just explore the way to wellness and forget the guilt! Get on over there and take your test! You’ll learn a lot and do great! There are no correct answers!

A Secret, Sinful Skin Secret for Skin

My issue has always been skin. I have purchased so many products to fix my skin that I seriously should have bought stock in these places! I have also abandoned every single store-bought product (aside from cosmetics) so not only am I saving money – I actually know what works to save tired, dehydrated, damaged skin!

I have fallen head over heels for this Rawalicious video! I had my doubts about the validity of  the uses of the stuff she talks about- but wow. I am literally wowed. A friend of mine mentioned this stuff awhile back and I’m sold. I’ve been using it ever since and I look and feel great!

She’ll tell you why……
